The two creators of ancient Hawai'i were called Wakea (Sky Father) and Papa (Earth Mother). The first child created was born of Wakea and Ho'ohokulani, a mortal daughter. This child was still-born and was placed into the earth. Kalo (taro) sprung forth and was named Haloa. Their second child lived and was called Haloa Naka. Haloa Naka cultivated and nurtured this first brother and the taro plant has been a revered food staple from the earliest known times to the present.
