Maka Luhi translates in this piece as tired eyes or tired people. In Kekona's sophisticated style of stippling, he brings a unique patterning of native Hawaiian images and 'aumakua. The mo'o (gekko) are the royal guardians flanking each side. The pueo (owl) is at the lower left and merges with wahine (woman). The i'o (hawk) is at the lower right and merges with kane (man). Layers of eyes speak volumns of emotions about a culture that has been often challenged but never defeated. Their spirit and dignity will be sustained with the blessings of Akua (God).
