In the Hawaiian language, 'Uhane means the spiritual soul. In this piece, the 'ulu (breadfruit) in the center represents the destination of souls which is Lani-keha (a legendary part of heaven). At the bottom are the spirits of those who have passed on (unihipilli) and are rising to enter the realms of the soul. The four corners are pawehe patterns (geometric motifs) that symbolize as follows: top left is Akua (God), top right is mo'o (lizard), bottom right is lalana (spider) and bottom left is ko'e (worm). Lele ka 'uhane (the soul flies free).
