![]() Native Hawaiian, Anthony Kekona describes his art as "stories told to me as a youngster." Inspired by dreams, they tell of a time of ancient Hawai'i. The art speaks of the 'aina, (the land), the kai (the sea), and the connections to 'aumakua (the family or personal gods of deified ancestors.) 'Aumakua took on the forms of certain animals, sea life, rocks or plants. Each piece of art is done in a style called "stippling." This is the placement of many dots upon the paper, layer upon layer, to achieve the various shades and hues. As Kekona says, "It's somewhat like the Tibetans do when they shake colored sand onto their artwork, one grain at a time." There is much to see hidden in these works... and even more to feel... in it's mana, or spiritual power. We
invite you to journey through the ancient mythology, history and culture
as seen through Hawaiian eyes. Kekona's art contains the kaona, or hidden
meaning of the Kanaka Maoli (full-blooded Hawaiian people.) Look deep
within these works and you will see many hidden images. They are given
with interpretations, but go to your na'au or the feelings in your own
heart and mind and this art will bring you closer to the expression
Hawaiian people hold so dear, Aloha. The © symbol means all rights to the art have been registered and copyrighted. No portions of the art may be used or duplicated. We ask you 'ihi ka pono ... treat with respect ... come forth and ask permission. Mahalo |
